FAQS
Licensing is fairly new and raises a lot of questions among people. Here we put together the questions we get asked most, and we answer it! Hope this helps. Simply click the question and it will show the answer.
Yes you can. If it is purely for personal use, it is totally free. If you are planning on releasing the song and distributing it via Spotify, iTunes etc., you will be making profit off of it and hence you will need a license.
When you purchase a license we give you permission to record your vocals and lyrics to the purchased beat. You make a so called derivative work. With the license bought, you may distribute this derivative version online with your fans via your favorite streaming platforms.
Untagged MP3 and WAV files and Trackout.
Yes, all producer voice tags and watermarks will be removed.
You can download the beat directly from our website.
Indefinitely. If you have bought Basic Lease, Trackout Lease or Exclusive Rights there is no time limit and your respective rights to the beat will remain for a life-time. If you have purchased a Basic Lease or a Trackout Lease and another customer purchases an Exclusive Rights License to a beat, your rights will remain intact up to the unit/use count you purchased.
We offer different licenses. The Basic Lease ($29.00), the Track Out Lease ($79.00), the Unlimited Lease ($149.00) and the Exclusive License ($ varies per beat).
Here are the differences:
The $29.00 Basic Lease gives you all the rights to get started. You can distribute the song on Spotify, Soundcloud, Youtube, iTunes etc. and make a profit off of it. It is limited in a sense that the license permits you to make profit up until 150.000 online audio streams, distribution of 5.000 copies, maximum 1 music video and radio broadcasting rights for 1 radio station. After that, you can buy a higher lease license to go on with your profits. For most artists starting out this is no concern, and this Lease will be more than enough.
The $79.00 Track Out Lease will give you more profit rights as the Basic Lease (300.000 online audio streams, distribution of 1.000 copies, 1 music video, broadcasting rights for 2 radio stations and you will get all the different sounds we use in the beat you bought. For instance the drum patterns, guitars, synths, fx effects etc. separately. This gives you the flexibility to restructure the song, use different elements in different parts, or you can have an engineer mix the song in an alternative way.
The $149.00 Unlimited Lease gives you the Track Outs as well, but with unlimited rights. No restriction on audio streams, video streams, music videos, radio broadcasts etc. Additionally, mainly important for artists looking to get airplay, this gives you the ability to make more profit off of radio play, online streams and distribution of your copies. You will get part of the publishing (50% publishing: 100% Lyrics, 0% Music) and will be able to profit off of the money made via a PRO (public rights organization).
The Exclusive License gives you all of the above but more. The main thing here is the exclusivity aspect, after this lease is bought we will not be able to sell the beat anymore to others. You will also get more publishing (negotiable).
We often get asked the question about the difference between an Unlimited Lease and the Exclusive Lease. The main difference is the exclusivity. After the Exclusive Lease is sold we can not sell the beat anymore in our Store + it will be taken down from Youtube. Next to the exclusivity you will get a higher Publishing Percentage with the exclusive license. If you are interested in buying a beat exclusively, just reach out to us.
As long as no one has bought the exclusive license, yes. Whereas in the past, it was hard for starting artists/rappers/singers/songwriters without a budget to get quality productions, licensing changed this forever. Instead of just selling a production to 1 artist for a high price, the production can be licensed several times and thus can be cheaper. Next to that it showcases the production ability of the producer and yields more and bigger custom jobs for the producers. This is beneficial for producers, combine that with the benefit for artists who get access to premium productions for a low price = Win-Win-Situation.
Yes we do, send your inquiry to our email chris@tokes-beats.com
There are lot of different factors determining the price of an exclusive beat: what publishing percentage are you after, how much traffic does the beat drive to our channels, for what time has the beat been online etc. All these weigh in on the price of an exclusive beat. It is all negotiable, so just reach out and talk to us about the possibilities.
With any of our licenses you are allowed to put the song on Spotify, iTunes.
Only on the distributor level. A lot of hip hop producers ask to be credited in the title (i.e. xxx - song (prod. by ….), but as we also offer a lot of pop productions, where this is not usual, we decided on not going that route. The distributor level means putting it in at your distributor under “Produced by”. If one then right clicks the song on Spotify and clicks “Show Credits”, our name will pop up.
No, you can only upload a derivative version of it.
Yes and no, you do have a the copyright over the lyrics you wrote. And depending on the license you can get a publishing cut on the derivative record. For the Non - Exclusive Leases, we however always maintain copyright over the underlying instrumental. For exclusives this can be negotiated.
Yes. For personal use and not-for-profit use you can use our beats for free as long as you give us credit. For content creators: You can monetize your videos with our Beats / Instrumentals as long as it is supportive to the video and not the main reason people will watch it.
We are based in Munich/Germany. If you happen to be around, just reach out and see if we can arrange something.
